Mieke van der Wansem

Mieke van der Wansem is the Associate Director of Educational Programs of the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy (CIERP) at The Fletcher School, Tufts University. Mieke develops educational and research materials, proposals and projects; designs and implements executive education training programs; manages the Climate Policy Lab – UNDP collaborative projects and internships; manages special events; liaises with CIERP alumni; and develops fellowship, internship, and job opportunities for graduate students.

Mieke has over twenty years experience as organizational and program leader and manager, trainer, and researcher on environmental and natural resource policy issues in the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia. Mieke designs and delivers executive education programs focused on negotiation for sustainable development, tailored to professional practitioners in the field. The goal of these programs is to facilitate professionals from many different sectors, and particularly from developing countries, to be better able to achieve sustainable development goals through effective stakeholder engagement and negotiation. Mieke has authored many multi-stakeholder negotiation simulations on natural resource and development conflict topics, some of which are for sale at the Harvard Program on Negotiations teaching materials and publications website.

In the past few years, Mieke has worked in close collaboration with the Sustainability Challenge Foundation (SCF) in the Netherlands, and in several cases with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), to conduct 9 different negotiation and stakeholder engagement trainings.
