Does gender matter in negotiation?
The rol of gender in the mutual gains approach in negotiation and mediation
Hannah Riley Bowles & Barbara Oliveira
Monday December 9, 2024 – from 19.30 to 20.30
(1:30-2:30 pm EST)

How do gender stereotypes influence negotiation behaviors and outcomes? Do genders have markedly different negotiation styles? And does one gender have advantages over the other in negotiation settings? Under what specific conditions is gender a critical factor? And what are strategies to mitigate these effects? The Program On Negotiation recently mentioned that according to a recent study the strength of our negotiation ethics may vary depending on our gender. Gender’s impact on negotiation behavior and outcomes is not uniform but varies significantly across different situations. The article triggered our proposal to organize a webinar on the the issues related to the gender question, focused on the role and position of women in negotiation and mediation. We are very proud to announce Hannah Riley Bowles of Harvard Kennedy School, a leading expert on gender in negotiation, as our speaker. She will be interviewed by Barbara Oliveira.

Hannah Riley Bowles is a leading expert on how gender influences pay negotiations and, more broadly, on negotiation as a micro-mechanism of inequality. She has been actively involved in negotiation and conflict management training, practice, and research for more than 25 years, having worked for the governments of Argentina, Costa Rica, and Germany. Her current research focuses on women’s leadership advancement, examining both situational barriers and individual strategies.
Bowles is Co-director of the Center for Public Leadership, the Women and Public Policy Program and is the Roy E. Larsen Senior Lecturer in Public Policy and Management at the Harvard Kennedy School. She teaches conflict and collaboration in the master of public policy core curriculum and is the faculty director of Women and Power, the Kennedy School’s executive program for women in senior leadership from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
